Mr Brendan Smith, T.D, has been informed by the North Eastern Health Board that following interview by the Local Appointments Commission, a contract has been issued to the successful candidate for the post of Consultant Nephrologist and General Physician at Cavan General Hospital.

The Health Board in their correspondence to Deputy Smith stated that it is expected that this Consultant will commence in late 2004 and this will allow plans to be brought forward for the future expansion and development of renal services which require consultant-led expertise.

Deputy Smith has welcomed this new appointment and he stated that the Minister for Health and Children, Mr Micheál Martin, T.D., had informed him in reply to a Parliamentary Question in Dáil Éireann that the Health Board had advised his Department that with the filling of this post on a permanent basis the Board intends to review all aspects of renal care in the region, including hospital dialysis, outpatient services and will also consider the provision of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

The Cavan/Monaghan Fianna Fáil Deputy complimented all the staff of the Renal Dialysis Unit and Cavan/Monaghan Branch of the Irish Kidney Association for their work over the years in delivering this important service.
