Work to start on College
Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., and Senator Diarmuid Wilson have announced that the Minister for Education and Science, Mr Noel Dempsey, T.D., has now authorised Co. Cavan Vocational Education Committee to place a contract in respect of the construction of the new College of Further Studies in Cavan Town. The Fianna Fáil Oireachtas Members added that this contract is in excess of € 5 Million and the subsequent fitting out and commissioning of the new building will mean a further major financial investment and will provide the most modern state of the art educational facilities.
Deputy Smith stated that this is a most welcome decision by the Minister, which will enable work to commence within weeks. He added that the growing importance of the College to Cavan Town and County is evident with this major building project and it recognises the very real contribution the College has to make to the continued growth and development of the town and county and indeed the wider catchment area.
Deputy Smith stated that in May 2003 the Minister for Education and Science, Mr Noel Dempsey, T.D., on a visit to the College outlined clearly his support for the Further Education sector and Cavan College of Further Studies. The Fianna Fáil Deputy, who is also Chairman of the Board of Management of the College, stated that the Minister’s visit was a clear statement of his support for the work that has taken place at the College and its importance in providing education and training programmes for students from a wide area.
Deputy Smith acknowledged the key role played by Cavan College, in the development of the region, through the provision of highly skilled graduates in a variety of areas. The growth of the College is a clear indication that it is successfully responding to the needs of the community and delivering a quality product through a wide range of courses.
Deputy Smith highlighted the role played by past and present members of the staff at Cavan College in its success. “Ireland’s continued economic growth is to a great extent dependent on our success in harnessing the innate talents of all our people, not alone in imparting skills, but also the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing circumstances and demands of the work-place”, he said.
Senator Wilson and Deputy Smith acknowledged the major contribution made by Clifford Kelly - Chairman VEC, Mr John McKay – CEO and all the staff and members of the VEC, Colm McEvoy – College Principal and former Principal Donal Crotty and the staff past and present at Cavan College. They stated that the College is very fortunate to have such a committed and dedicated staff and they acknowledged the contribution the staff have made to the growth and success of the College.
