Major progress being made in National Broadband Scheme rollout in Cavan


The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that the much-needed broadband connectivity currently being rolled out in Cavan.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Cavan/Monaghan T.D., Mr. Brendan Smith has confirmed that the much-needed broadband connectivity currently being rolled out in Cavan as a result of the National Broadband Scheme (NBS), has to date connected 27% of the targeted areas.

 

Mobile broadband provider 3, who are rolling out the NBS on behalf of the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, have now completed the initial phase of broadband rollout in the following district electoral divisions in Cavan: Ardue, Carn, Cootehill Rural, Bilberry, Doogary, Lissanover, Ballymachugh, Kilbride and Kill. 

 

The National Broadband Scheme is I am glad to confirm, making serious inroads into connecting rural parts of Cavan to a high quality service.  Steady progress is being made and I am assured by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, that by October 2010, full roll-out will be completed in the country”, Minister Smith said.

 

Minister Smith confirmed that homes and businesses across County Cavan will benefit from the National Broadband Scheme, with an estimated €223 million investment by 3, of which a maximum of €79.8 million will be contributed by the Government and the EU. 

 

For this phase of the roll-ou,t a significant part of the NBS coverage areas in the county now have access to high-speed and high-capacity broadband services.  The National Broadband Scheme will see further roll-out of world leading technology throughout most rural parts of Cavan.  This connectivity will enable businesses in the NBS coverage areas in Cavan to make the most of high speed internet, email and additional services opening up local and global markets, and potentially improving efficiencies and revenues.  All of which are vital during the current economic downturn”, he said.

 

Minister Smith also confirmed that home users will have access to high-speed and high-capacity wireless broadband where they can do everything they always wanted to do on the internet, whether it’s downloading music, surfing the web, checking emails, booking flights online, renewing their car tax or making free Skype calls abroad.
