Smith performs official opening of new classroom at Mullahoran Central National School

Award of second Green Flag also marked

Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has today (Thursday 4 September) performed the official opening of a new classroom at Mullahoran Central National School. He also used the occasion of his visit to mark the award of a second Green Flag to the school.

Minister Smith referred to the school’s very strong and proud links with past GAA glory and in particular with the 1947 All Ireland Final in New York, where the Deputy Principal, Marian Briody’s father stared as goalkeeper on the Cavan team.

Likewise, the Minister said: “it is lovely to know that the grand-nieces and grand-nephews of the late John Wilson, former Tánaiste and Minister for Education, who was also on that famous team, now attend the school here”.

He also highlighted the deep involvement of the school in cross border projects through such initiatives as the Pushkin Prizes project and  “Connecting People and Places”, where strong relationships have been developed with Derrylin Primary School in County Fermanagh.

As well as marking the opening of the new classroom and the attainment of a second Green Flag, the Minister said that he was delighted to be present to acknowledge the role of Rose Mary  O’Reilly, who was retiring the following day as Principal, after nearly 40 years as a teacher, 26 of which were spent in Mullahoran.

“There will be more significant occasions to celebrate her contribution, but on behalf of the school community, past and present, I want to convey sincere thanks to Rose Mary for her life in education, here and elsewhere, over the past 40 or so years”.

He also offered his best wishes to the incoming principal, Fionnuala McGahern, who would use her great experience as an asset in the years ahead.

In conclusion, the Minister wished all involved in the work of the school every success in the future.
