Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has welcomed funding of almost €16,000 to improve security arrangements for older people living in their own homes.

The funding, which has been approved by his Government colleague, Mr. John Curran, T.D., Minister for State at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, has been awarded to a number of groups in County Cavan under the Scheme of Community Support for Older people:

  • Ballyconnell Community Alert
  • Bruskey Community Alert
  • Maudabawn Community Alert
  • SVDP Ballieborough
  • SVDP Cootehill

The purpose of this Scheme is to encourage and assist the community’s support for older people by means of a community based grant scheme to improve the security of its older members in their own homes. Funding is available through these organisations for the provision of socially monitored alarms, door and window locks, security lighting and smoke alarms. Interior emergency lighting is also available to qualifying older people living on our off shore islands. Applications for funding can be made throughout the year.

Welcoming the funding, Minister Smith commended the successful groups for their outstanding voluntary work in the community, which was a great source of comfort and security to vulnerable older people.
