New visa deal very significant-Smith
Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has welcomed a new agreement with the US Government that will enable Irish citizens to work and travel in the US for up to 12 months.
Following months of negotiations, Mr. Micheál Martin, T.D., Minister for Foreign Affairs announced that agreement had been reached on a new Working Holiday Agreement that will enable a minimum of 20,000 Irish citizens who are in, or have recently completed, post secondary education to work and travel in the US for up to 12 months.
“This is a very significant breakthrough which has the potential to benefit many young people in County Cavan who wish to live and work in the US for up to a year. It opens up great opportunities for those who would wish to experience the culture and lifestyle of the US for a long period of time and will, I have no doubt, be keenly sought by many young people in our County”, Minister Smith said.
Under the terms of the deal, up to 5,000 US citizens will also be able to work and travel in Ireland on the same basis. The Minister and Cavan/Monaghan Deputy said that the agreement was an important step in strengthening the depth of the relationship between Ireland and the US and by encouraging young people to work and travel, would further cement those ties which have been sustained for so long.
