Mr. Brendan Smith, T.D., Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has performed the official opening of new studios for Northern Sound Radio in Monaghan Town.

In addition to the studios, which include state of the art technology, new training facilities have been developed, which offers media training for up to 20 students.

Developed at a total cost of €500,000, the Minister and Cavan/Monaghan T.D. paid tribute to Northern Sound: “as a public representative since 1992, Northern Sound Radio has always played a key role in helping me to communicate my message and keeping me informed. Indeed, it is a vital medium for all public representatives and I can say without fear of contradiction, that it has always been characterised by the balance of its coverage, giving equal treatment to all political parties and their representatives”, he said.

Minister Smith stated that the new facilities mark a further stage in the development of an outstanding local radio station which has consistently been in the top three stations in the country for listenership figures.

As well as welcoming the six new jobs which have been created, he said that the facilities will play a very important part in training and developing the broadcasters of the future. “I understand that 20 FAS students have already enrolled in a 40 week course which offers practical on the job training, which is unique to Northern Sound. I am especially pleased that the new facilities here will operate on a cross border basis. Close relationships have endured over many years here between the two jurisdictions and since the Good Friday Agreement in particular, these ties have grown increasingly stronger.  This cross border training element is another very significant part in bringing the two parts of our island closer together”, he said.

He concluded by wishing all associated with the new station well and looked forward to the station growing its listenership further and developing an even better range of services to the thousands of people who tune into it every day.
